The reality is that the house has an edge over you. The main
purpose of building a rake is to allow the house to take money
from you in small, unnoticed amounts. A player can take a few
measures so as to ensure that this practice is minimized:
There are a few poker rooms that only rake the pot after it
has reached a specific amount. In this case you can play opposite
to the table's style.
Exploiting tight players is another method one can use. This
can be done by using tactics such as blind stealing and buying
free cards. Blind stealing is betting only when blinds are left
in the game. Buying a free card is usually used last. If no body
else raises post-flop, you bet. This will result in, usually
at least, cutting down on the number of players and potential
money in the pot. A free card is best used with drawing hands.
Make sure about your position, when you are playing against
aggressive player. You need to tighten up your stance, so to
speak. Play only premium starting hands and fold after the flop
in case you don't come up with much. This is because of the same
reason as tightening up. You will get raked when you win, but
if you win just one extra big hand for playing like this, you'll
have covered the cost of the rake.
In case the rake is a set percentage (usually 4% - 10%), an
aggressive players tactics wont be too successful. Every failed
attempt at blind stealing is going to be raked, and bluffing
will be worth 4%-10% less. Frankly, you need to be too good a
player to overcome that percentage, and in case you do it then
you no longer will have to worry about the rake.
In few casinos, if the game becomes short-handed, you can call
to lower the rake. Its called the rake break. Though, confirm
the same as I believe dealers are not allowed to suggest on this
matter.
